Delivery charges for goods purchased online to addresses in the Highlands and Islands has been a big problem for years. There are two issues which contribute to the problem.

The Class System

Eighteen years into the 21st century and the class system is still alive and well, in the UK. The apex of that class system seems to be as popular as ever and we still have an unelected parliamentary second chamber where our "representatives" get called Baron or Baroness, except for the ones called Bishop. I've always liked to believe that the people in Scotland are more egalitarian, and indeed support for the monarchy is much lower (53%), but an absence of the class system is too much to hope for. The class system creeps into every aspect of people's lives.

How did we do?

It is not possible to do anything online, and sometimes in meatspace, without getting follow-up communications by email or SMS asking: how did we do? It has become a disease. Organisations must be doing it to harvest email addresses, solicit social media "likes", satisfy a management consultant's recommendation or a combination of all three.

Black Friday: Banned

I have noticed an increasing number of retailers promoting Black Friday sales in the last few years, but this year I have been inundated with "special" offers. The concept of Black Friday makes sense in the USA where a large proportion of the population have a four days off work due to the Thanksgiving celebration being on a Thursday. Anyone promoting Black Friday here is just partaking in a cynical marketing ploy.

Not built to last

This is going to sound like one of these moans that things ain't made they way they use to be. It will sound like that because that is exactly what it is. The last time I bought a pair of safety wellies that really lasted was in 1994. They were purchased in a local hardware store, were a great fit, certainly not expensive and lasted me until 2010. I didn't realise it at the time but they were a landmark pair of wellies; durable in a way that modern wellies aren't. Even after a long serviceable life as footwear they fulfilled one more purpose as a gasket for a hot water tank, however that is another story.
